I recently took a trip into my local Waterstones, purchased a book and spent some time in their cafe. I took tea and a Belgian bun as a treat. I chose this spot to conduct some character profiling for a unit for my degree in Communications and Media. This is what I wrote (on the back of some receipts).
Mothers meeting
We come together to chat, to gossip. To 'Catch up with the girls' they would say.
The worries of the housewife drift away as we all slurp on our teas in Waterstones coffee shop.
But as the teapot empties my eyes begin to glaze in a haze as I remember my home life, my middle class wife life.
My dear husband whose so un-originally bonking his secretary,
The disappointment of my life, degree that diminished at 32 weeks,
My parents brains which have melted to a dementia mush,
and also what to make for dinner tonight.
but at least I have my career, my one job, much like yours with water cooler conversations and meetings and office gossip, I have my career as a mum.
Cafe worker
A modern myth, the inbetweeners. Not quite sure who they are or what they do other than create our morning brew.
we think they must be at a cross roads, in between jobs but they've been for a while now so maybe a cross roads in life.
Although there is something we must not forget, whilst they have only just noticed us gazing at them, they have always been gazing back, telling our stories, making up facts.
So next time you rush in take a moment to consider what makes them tick before you call out your coffee pick.
